WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPMENT OF MARINE FISHERIES ALONG WEST BENGAL COAST

            The Fishery Survey of India, Visakhapatnam Zonal Base in association with the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal organized a workshop on "Development of Marine Fishery along West Bengal on 12th and 14th September, 2001 in two marine fishing centres of the State for the benefit of the fishermen community in the region. The workshop on 12th September was conducted in Diamond Harbour and another one on 14th September at Digha.  The Hon. Minister in charge of Fisheries, Shri Kiranmoy Nanda inaugurated the workshop at Diamond Harbour.  Ms. Nita Chowdhury, Joint Secretary (Fy), Dept. of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Agriculture presided over the function. Shri D.P.Banerjee, Special Secretary to the Govt. of West Bengal, Department of Fisheries welcomed the participants while Dr.V.S. Somvanshi, Director General, FSI delivered the key note address. Others who addressed the gathering included Shri B.K. Roy, Managing Director, BENFISH and Ms. Bharti Ghosh, Sub Divisional Officer.  The inaugural session was followed by a technical session wherein scientists and officers from FSI, MPEDA, CIFT, Officers of the State Fisheries Department and a large number of fisher folks from the marine sector attended the workshop for the benefit of the fishermen community in the region.  An exhibition depicting the activities of FSI and its role in the development of the marine fishery in the Indian EEZ with particular reference to West Bengal was organized in the venue of the workshop. The exhibition was further supported by demonstration of fishing/navigational equipments arranged by M/s. Elcome Marine Services and M/s.Norinco (P) Ltd., for the benefit of the fishermen.

            A similar workshop was held on 14th September at the Marine Aquarium & Research Centre of ZSI, Digha which was inaugurated by Shri Pranab Khar, Chairman, Digha, Fishermen Association.  Shri S. Gupta, Addl. Director of Fisheries, Govt. of West Bengal, Shri Topass Biswas, Sub.Divisional.Officer, Contai marine sector was the Chief Guest.  Dr. V.S. Somvanshi, Director General, FSI presented the genesis of the workshop.  Shri P.K.Chaterjee, Dy. Director, ZSI and Shri S.R.Bhattacharya representative of Coast Guard also addressed the gathering during the occasion.  The technical session was chaired by Shri Topass Dutta, Dy. Director, MPEDA, wherein various aspects of deep sea fishing off West Bengal, harvest and post-harvest technology and export potential of marine fishes were presented by the Scientists from FSI, CIFT, MPEDA and State Fisheries Department.Representatives of various fisheries Associations actively participated in the workshop and made so many demands to the fisheries officials for the development of marine fishery along the West Bengal coast.  Some of the major demands raised by the community were implementation of ban on (i) monsoon trawling upto 31st August (2)destructive fishing like trawling and  (3)  the use of mosquito net for collection of shrimp seeds. They also demanded measures for reducing pollution in the sea. An exhibition and demonstration of the fishing, navigational and communicatin equipment were also arranged at the venue for the benefit of the fishermen of Contai marine sector.  The workshop arranged at both the sectors received due importance in the wake of the effort of the Government in encouraging the fishermen to undertake deepsea fishing.

SCIENTIST FROM UNIVERSITY OF PARIS VISITS FSI HQS

            Mr. Jean Michel Andre, Scientist belonging to a research team associated with ocean modeling for biochemical and fishery environment studies visited FSI, HQs on 1st August, 2001.  The research effort directed to  the modeling of parameters relevant to fisheries like temperature, currents, primary production, dissolved oxygen and forage abundance for target fish species under the Indo-French Centre for Environmental Research (IFCFR). Mr. Jean made a presentation. The above research team is on the process of building up a proposal dedicated to Indian Ocean and the purpose of his visit was to discuss potential collaboration with several institutes and laboratories in India.  A meeting of the scientists of FSI (HQs) was held to discuss the proposal and the possible co-operation that could be extended to the visiting delegations.

RECOGNITION TO MORMUGAO BASE OF FSI BY GOA UNIVERSITY

            In accordance with the recommendation of the affiliation inquiry committee of the Goa University the Mormugao Zonal Base of FSI has been granted recognition by the University for conducting  research activities leading to Ph.D. degree in Zoology.  The initial recognition is for a period of one year commencing from June, 2001.  Other universities where FSI has got affiliation and recognition for research studies leading to post-graduate degrees M.Sc. (By Research) and Ph.D. include University of Mumbai and Andhra University.  The recognition of the institute by the University will enable scientific staff engaged in fisheries research to enhance their qualification further and contribute to the development of marine fisheries in India.

CELEBRATION OF "HINDI DAY" AND "HINDI FORTNIGHT"  AT FISHERY SURVEY OF INDIA (HQS)

            The FSI headquarters observed "Hindi Day" on 14th September and "Hindi Fortnight" from 14-09-01 to 28-09-01.  Significance of this Hindi fortnight was that for the first time, a three day Hindi Workshop was conducted exclusively for officers and scientific staff from 25-09-01 to 27-09-01.  The workshop was arranged in association with Central Translation Bureau, Mumbai.  Dr. Dhangal Jhalte, Jt. Director, Central Translation Bureau addressed the participants.  The objectives of the workshop was to help the supervisory staff to overcome the difficulties while working in Hindi and to make them aware of the official Language Acts.  Twelve officers and scientists participated in the workshop.

            During Hindi fortnight various competitions in Hindi i.e. essay writing, correspondence, noting and drafting, translation and general knowledge were conducted.  Valedictory function was arranged on 4th  October, 2001 at HQs.  Shri Rajeshwar Prasad Uniyal, Assistant Director (O.I.) CIFE, Mumbai was the Chief Guest on this occasion.  The function was presided over by Dr. V.S.Somvanshi, Director General.  Dr. A.K.Bhargava, Sr. Fisheries Scientist, Chairman of the Official Language Implementation Committee welcomed the Chief Guest.  The Director General in his address said that, we have to put more effort to achieve the target prescribed as per Annual programme.  The Chief Guest in his address requested all the staff members to contribute something in the field of progressive use of Hindi in the office.  Prizes were distributed to the winners of the various competitions by the Chief Guest.

            Port Blair Base of Fishery Survey of India also celebrated Hindi Week from 14-09-2001 to 21-09-2001. During the course of the celebration number of programmes and competitions were organized by the Institute for creating awareness and promoting the use of Hindi in official work which includes poetry, essay writing, elocution and quiz competition in Hindi and most of the letters were sent in Hindi.  Valedictory function of 'Hindi Week' was celebrated on 21-09-2001.  The programme was presided over by Shri P.Sivaraj, Sr. Fisheries Scientist and Shri Nagesh Ram, Director of Fishery, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Port Blair was the Chief Guest. Winners of various competition were awarded with prizes.

            Visakhapatnam Base of Fishery Survey of India celebrated Hindi Fortnight from 01-09-2001 to 14-09-2001.  Hindi Day was observed on 14-09-2001.  The Chief Guest on the occasion was Shri M.K.Devraj, Dy.Director, CIFNET, Visakhapatnam.  Elocution in Hindi on "Twenty First Century and Official Language" was conducted.  To encourage the staff to work in Hindi, A three day Hindi Workshop was organized from 24-09-2001 to 26-09-2001.  The topics covered in the workshop were Hindi noting and drafting, general correspondence and terminology.

Best child artist of Bharat Natyam

            Kumari Anjana Mohan, daughter of Shri J.M. Karkera, Chief Engineer Gr.I,  Visakhapatnam Zonal Base of FSI  has been judged as one of the best child artists in Bharat Natyam, a classical form of Indian dance.  The National Bal Bhavan, New Delhi has nominated her to participate in "Young Talent 2001",  an international festival held at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan of the Soviet Republic from 25-30th June, 2001.  She was among ten children selected from India for the event.  Kumari Anjana, 12 year old girl has won a number of prizes for her performance in India and abroad.  A student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Waltair,  Visakhapatnam (St.VIII) has received about 250 titles for her participation in different events.  She has also been conferred with the titles "Natya Ranjani Anjana" and "Charana Manjeera" among other titles. Besides being a classical dancer she has also won many prizes and titles in music, drawing, painting, elocution, quiz competition etc. at the young age.
